These looms had many powers, and there were many apprentices on the scaffolds built on the top and back of the loom in order to lift the warp wires required according to the embroidery of the fabric and to pass the colored threads between them, and they would remove the necessary power upon the order of the weaver. Such benches were called chin counters. These machines are called Jacquard looms because a French mechanic named Joseph-Marie Jacquard mechanized this classic loom. In jacquard looms, the work of lifting the warp wires and passing the colored threads between them is done automatically, so that even the most intricate embroidery fabrics can be woven by a single worker.

SILK

Silk is a soft, shiny fiber produced by the silkworm. Silk
beetle is a caterpillar and produces this fiber to spin itself a cocoon. People make yarn and weave fabric from this fiber.

Silk is very strong. It is also very spectacular when painted. Sometimes silk is mixed with other fibers to make upholstery and drapery fabrics. Silk weaving began 4,600 years ago in China. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, it developed greatly in Italy and France. Silk is mostly obtained from the mulberry silkworm. The female of this insect dies after laying 200-500 eggs. Tiny caterpillars hatching from the eggs feed on mulberry leaves. It grows rapidly and reaches 7-8 centimeters in 20-30 days. When its growth is complete, it stops eating and spins a cocoon of fine silk fiber around it. People make silkworms in breeding farms to obtain silk. In order to prevent the silkworm from being damaged by tearing, the cocoons are boiled without waiting for the silkworm to develop as much as it can. Then the silk is unwound by hand or by machines and turned into a hank. Between 450 and 900 meters of uninterrupted yarn can emerge from a cocoon. Fabric is made by weaving these threads on looms.

Silk is a good-looking, soft, shiny and durable fiber of animal origin, which can be easily and well dyed. Silk is known as the queen of fibres. Silk, which has been playing an important role in people’s economic life for over 4000 years, has been transported to Europe over the years following the silk road passing through China, India, Tashkent, Baghdad, Damascus and Istanbul. During this time, silk found a buyer as a more valuable product than gold. Turkey is one of the countries suitable for silkworm and mulberry cultivation in terms of its geographical location and climate. Some provinces in Thrace, Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean regions and especially Amasya, Diyarbakir and Hatay regions are the areas where silkworm breeding is widespread.

WOOL (WOOL FABRIC)

Wool is a type of natural fiber originating from animal hair obtained from some mammals (especially sheep, goats, camels, llamas, rabbits). It is used in the production of blankets and winter clothes because it keeps it warm. Wool fiber is obtained from sheep by different methods, usually by shearing from live animals. This type of wool is called shear wool. The commercial value of this wool is higher than that obtained by other methods. The wool obtained by processing the skins of animals for butchery is called plate wool or butcher’s wool. The wool obtained from the hide of an animal that has died for any reason is called fleece. If dish wool or hide fleece (fleece) is plucked from the skin, it is of lower quality than shear wool, as it also contains hair roots.

LINEN

Linen is a natural fiber type. One of the biggest factors in the use of linen as an upholstery fabric is that it is very durable and does not stretch. Linen has dust-proof feature. Color does not fade in the sun. Naturally, due to such properties, it is used in the field of upholstery fabric.
